Language access is human right.
Early language access. Lasting outcomes.
Why this work?
Early language access is foundational to a child’s cognitive, social, and emotional development. Deaf and hard of hearing children are at unique risk for language deprivation when they do not have consistent, accessible language during the earliest years of life. While hearing technology can support access to sound, it does not guarantee full access to language. When language access is delayed or incomplete, the consequences can be lifelong, affecting learning, mental health, relationships, and overall well-being.
Language First Foundation exists to ensure that Deaf children have access to a complete language during the critical years when the brain is most ready to learn. Because language access changes everything.
What is our philosophy?
We believe language comes first.
Our work is grounded in a child-centered approach that prioritizes full, accessible language over modality debates. We recognize American Sign Language (ASL) as a complete, natural language that provides immediate and reliable access, supporting healthy brain development regardless of a child’s hearing technology or communication pathway.
We view ASL as a protective and empowering linguistic foundation. Our philosophy is informed by research, clinical practice, and lived experience.
Every child deserves a first language. Families deserve honest information and meaningful support.
Who do we serve?
Language First Foundation serves:
Deaf and hard of hearing infants and young children, particularly during the critical early years of language development
Families navigating new diagnoses, communication decisions, and access barriers
Underserved and under-resourced families facing systemic inequities
Parents and caregivers who need support and advocacy in navigating educational and legal proceedings related to their child’s language access and services
Our work honors diverse identities, backgrounds, and communication journeys.
Our impact.
Our impact begins with access.
Through our initiatives, families gain tools, knowledge, and support to build strong, accessible language environments. Children are given opportunities to develop language during the years that matter most, supporting learning, relationships, and emotional well-being.
We measure impact through a combination of qualitative outcomes, developmental progress, family feedback, and emerging data, with a commitment to continuous learning and improvement. Every story, every connection, and every child with increased language access represents meaningful change.
Transparency and trust.
Language First Foundation is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to responsible stewardship of resources in support of early language access for Deaf and hard of hearing children. While the Foundation is mission-aligned with Language First, a separate for-profit entity, the two organizations are legally and financially distinct, with separate governance, finances, and operations.
The Foundation’s role is to expand access, equity, and community-based support by funding programs, resources, and initiatives that may not otherwise be accessible to families. All charitable contributions to Language First Foundation are used exclusively to advance its nonprofit mission.
